There are four main parts of baking cupcakes, making the batter, making the frosting, baking the cake, and decorating. These are discussed below thoroughly.
How to Make the Batter?
Step 1: Put the butter and the sugar in the mixing bowl and cream the sugar thoroughly. You can use the electric mixer or beater to cream the sugar but I usually just use the spatula which takes more time but reduces the chance of gluten build-up. Mix gently and slowly with the beater or spatula. Wipe the sides of the bowl to make sure the butter and sugar are incorporated nicely.
Step 2: Break and add one egg at a time and mix thoroughly. Mix one egg at a time to make sure all ingredients are mixing properly. Mix all of the eggs in the mix and add the vanilla extract in between the eggs.
Step 3: Mix the dry ingredients like flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl and add half of the mixture into the butter, eggs, and sugar mixture. Use the electric beater or spatula to fold the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients together. Do not mix too fast or for too long to avoid creating too much gluten in the cupcakes.
Step 4: Add the milk slowly and check the consistency of the cake batter. The batter should not be too thick or too thin. Add more milk if the batter gets too thick and add more flour if the batter gets too thin.
How to Make the Frosting?
The frosting is made with powdered sugar, vanilla extract, butter, and milk. Add these ingredients in a separate mixing bowl and beat them with an electric beater until the butter becomes foamy. Fill the piping bag with the frosting and use the frosting tip on the piping bag.
How to Bake the Cupcakes?
Preheat your oven to 374 degrees Fahrenheit or 190 degrees Celsius for 5-10 minutes. Pour the batter into the paper molds and set them in the middle racks of the oven. Make sure that the settings are so that heat is coming from the top and bottom both.
It will take about 20-22 minutes for the cakes to get baked. Use a clean stick or toothpick to poke in one cupcake and if the stick comes out with no batter stuck on it, it will indicate that the cakes have been baked.
Put the cupcakes on a cooling rack to cool down and then use the piping bag to put the frosting on top of the cupcakes. Add sprinkles to your liking for decoration.
Things to Be Careful About
The first thing to keep in mind is to always use room-temperature butter for both the frosting and the batter. The mixing process will be difficult if you use butter that is too cold or melted. Keep the butter and the eggs out of the fridge for a couple of hours before making the cupcakes.
The second thing to be careful about is to avoid overmixing the batter. This is especially a concern if you are using an electric beater. Only beat until all the ingredients are incorporated properly. Overmixing will result in gluten build-up in the cupcake which will make it taste more like bread and less like a cake and will ruin your entire batch.
The third important thing to be aware of is the heat. Even though all oven measures temperature using the same scale, they do not get heated up the same. Some ovens will get way more hotter than other ovens at the same temperature. So keep an eye on the cupcakes as they bake and adjust the temperature accordingly.
Not many good things in life can be enjoyed without difficulty but vanilla cupcakes are an exception. This wonderfully delicious food is very easy to prepare and anyone of any age can easily prepare this in their home using only a few ingredients.
